El Altiplano lies to the northeast of Granada, where immense tablelands rise more than 1000 metres above sea level. Its central part is occupied by a huge plain nearly deserted, surrounded by the ranges of Sagra, Castril, Baza and Orce. This is a land of contrasts, with short and warm summers and cold winters. In spring we can contemplate the amazing spectacle of the snow melting and descending from the summits to the reservoirs of El Portillo, San Clemente and El Negratín. This district of beautiful landscapes has two natural parks, the Sierra de Baza and the Sierra de Castril.
According to the archaeological evidences found, this was the land that sheltered the first European man more than a million years ago. Afterwards, the Iberians arrived, then the Romans and, from the VIII, the Muslims. The trace left by this Islamic culture is still appreciated in villages such as Benamaurel or Castilléjar, where we find caves used by these andalusíes settlers. The old Barrio de Santiago de la Alcazaba of Baza or the Alcazaba de las Siete Torres of Orce are other places where Muslim heritage can be breathed.
After the Christian conquer they built temples such as the monumental Colegiata de Huéscar and Baza and churches and houses-palaces such as the Enriquez palaces in Baza or the Casa de los Patiños in the Puebla de Don Fadrique.
This district offers touristy accommodation inside caves in Guadix and El Marquesado, being one of the most distinctive attractions of the province, comparable in quality to three stars hotels.
Among its exquisite cuisine we find the Segureño lamb or home-made sausages which are dried inside the caves. It has, as well, an ancestral craftsmanship. In the High Plateau you can purchase from replicas of argáricas cups made in the workshops of archaeological ceramic of Galera to guitars made the craftsman way in Baza.
The High Plateau has a very complete selection of attractions; from picturesque horse rides to paragliding and hang-gliding from the Jabalcón peak, as well as windsurfing, kayaking, sailing or trekking.
