The western area of the Province of Granada (the Poniente Granadino) is well known ‘the last Nasrid frontier’, the old border between the Mushm Nasrid Kingdom of Granada and the Christian Kingdom of Castile. The towns of the region and their people played an important role during the final years of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada, the last Muslim presence in Spain.
The region consists of a mixture of Muslim ruins on the highest peaks and other notably Christian fortresses and structures - reminders of the victory of Christianity over Islam in the region. The villages line the sides of the hills in a typically haphazard fashion and the countryside is filled with olive groves and to a lesser almonds. The orchards in the river valleys and the remaining reserves of Mediterranean woodland in the mountains are significante local features.
The local landscapes are typical of rural Andalusian areas, The cultural richness of the Poniente is notably demonstrated by the designation of Loja, Alhama de Granada. Montefrío, Moclín and Illora as National Cultural- Heritage Sites by the Andalusian Government.
